ICAW2026：堆肥壁画紹介
毎年5月第1週は世界各地でICAW（国際堆肥啓発週間：International Compost Awareness Week）が実施されています。
エム・シー・エスはICAW2026の期間に合わせて、食品リサイクルと堆肥化の取り組みを紹介しています。
2025年、私たちは自社で製造した堆肥を使って、工場内に「堆肥壁画」を制作しました。
このプロジェクトは、当社に勤務する地元のアーティストからの提案からはじまりました。全従業員が、食品リサイクルと堆肥化に関わるそれぞれのイメージを描き、そこからひとつの大きな画面へと展開しました。
完成した約10mの壁画には、微生物の働きや有機物の分解、発酵、再生のイメージが宇宙のように広がっています。
この堆肥壁画は、一般的な壁画とは大きく異なります。
使用した絵の具は堆肥を水で溶いたもので、紫外線や雨風の影響を受けながら少しずつ風化し、剥落していきます。私たちは壁画の下に花壇を設置して、バジル、落花生、春菊、ニンニクなどの栽培をはじめました。
剥落した壁画の堆肥が土へ還り、花壇の作物を育てる仕組みそのものが、私たちが目指す有機資源の循環を表現しています。
私たちの堆肥壁画は完成して終わる作品ではなく、時間とともに変化し、風化し、土へと還り、植物の成長へとつながっていきます。
私たちはこの壁画を通じて、食品リサイクルと堆肥化を、知識だけでなく、目に見える体験として伝えていきたいと考えています。
現在、この堆肥壁画を見るために地元の子どもたちや全国各地から多くの方が工場を訪れてくださり、食品リサイクルと堆肥化を、アート作品を通した体験として知っていただく場にもなっています。
ICAW 2026: Compost Mural Project
Every year during the first week of May, International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is observed around the world.
In conjunction with ICAW 2026, MCS is sharing its ongoing efforts in food recycling and composting.
In 2025, we created a “Compost Mural” inside our facility using compost produced by MCS.
This project began with a proposal from a local artist who works at our company. Each employee drew their own image related to food recycling and composting, and these individual images were then developed into one large mural.
The completed mural, measuring approximately 10 meters in length, presents images of microbial activity, organic decomposition, fermentation, and regeneration, spreading across the wall like a universe.
This Compost Mural is very different from an ordinary mural.
The “paint” used for the mural was made simply by mixing compost with water. As a result, the mural is gradually affected by sunlight, rain, and wind, slowly weathering and flaking away over time.
Beneath the mural, we installed a small garden bed and began growing basil, peanuts, garland chrysanthemum, and garlic.
As the compost from the mural flakes away and returns to the soil, it helps nourish the plants growing below.
This structure itself expresses the organic resource circulation that we aim to realize.
Our Compost Mural is not a work that ends when it is completed. It changes over time, weathers, returns to the soil, and connects to the growth of plants.
Through this mural, we hope to communicate food recycling and composting not only as knowledge, but also as a visible and tangible experience.
Today, local children and visitors from across Japan come to our facility to see the Compost Mural. It has become a place where people can experience and learn about food recycling and composting through an artwork.
