ICAW2026(国際堆肥啓発週間)

毎年5月第1週は世界各地でICAW(国際堆肥啓発週間:International Compost Awareness Week)が実施されています。

Feed the Soil that Feeds Us.”

Every year during the first week of May, International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is observed around the world.

ICAW is a global awareness campaign that began in Canada in the 1990s, aiming to promote composting and highlight the importance of organic resource recycling.

The core principles of ICAW are:

・To recognize organic waste not as “waste,” but as a valuable resource
・To nurture soil and enhance soil health
・To foster a society where resources circulate sustainably

Today, ICAW is supported by organizations such as the Compost Research & Education Foundation, along with companies, municipalities, educational institutions, community groups, and individuals across North America, Europe, and Oceania. Activities include social media campaigns, compost distribution, facility tours, and educational workshops.

Although ICAW is not yet widely recognized in Japan, MCS is taking this opportunity during ICAW 2026 to share our ongoing efforts in food recycling and composting.

Since 2006, we have operated a composting facility in Shimagahara, Iga City, Mie Prefecture, where we process food waste into compost.

Food residues collected from factories, restaurants, and schools are decomposed and fermented through microbial activity, transforming into compost. This compost is then delivered to farmers, where it nourishes the soil that supports agricultural production.

In recent years, we have also engaged in initiatives such as free compost distribution and collaboration with schools, contributing to the development of a local circular economy. Our work goes beyond waste management—it supports a system in which resources circulate within the region, connecting nature and everyday life.

The theme of ICAW 2026 is:
“Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us.”

MCS will continue to contribute to local resource circulation and the cultivation of healthy soil through food recycling and composting.
